The University of St. Thomas School of Law (Minnesota) is pleased to invite applications for a full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty position in its Department of Lawyering Skills, beginning in Fall 2026. Our Lawyering Skills professors typically teach two sections of Lawyering Skills I (3 credits) in the fall and two sections of Lawyering Skills II (2 credits) in the spring. Each professor also teaches an additional course (usually in the spring) at least once every other year.

The salary range for this position is $100,000 - $160,000. This range represents the University’s good-faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The specific salary offered will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.

The School of Law is on the University’s campus in downtown Minneapolis, within walking distance of federal and state courthouses, most of Minnesota’s leading law firms, Target Corporation’s international headquarters, and numerous other employers and mentors. The Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area has the nation’s highest per capita number of Fortune 500 companies, including 3M, Cargill, Best Buy, Ecolab, UnitedHealth Group, Target, Land O’Lakes, and General Mills. The Twin Cities are known for their cultural and social amenities and are consistently named one of the most livable metropolitan areas in the nation. The School of Law is in the heart of Minneapolis’s theater district, a short walk from the Orpheum Theater, Minnesota Orchestra, and Walker Art Center. Professional sports teams, including the Minnesota Twins (MLB), Timberwolves (NBA), Lynx (WNBA), and Vikings (NFL) are all within walking distance, and the Wild (NHL) and Loons (MLS) are a short metro ride away in St. Paul.
UNIVERSITY BACKGROUND:
The School of Law is fortunate to be part of the University of St. Thomas, a dynamic, mission-driven, urban university that is the largest private university in Minnesota, with campuses in St. Paul and Minneapolis. The University has more than 9,000 students at the undergraduate and graduate/professional levels; eight colleges and professional schools (including schools of business, engineering, health, and others, along with the law school); and more than fifty-five graduate and professional degree programs. The University also competes as a Division I school in intercollegiate athletics.
Applicants must possess a J.D. or equivalent academic degree. Candidates should have strong academic credentials and experience as a lawyer (or judicial law clerk) as well as teaching aptitude or experience, preferably in a law-school setting. Candidates must demonstrate strong scholarly potential, including through a job talk and job talk paper, and a commitment to excellence in teaching. If hired, this person will be expected to maintain an active scholarly agenda (as professional engagement through research is one of the requirements for tenure), and to engage in both internal and external service, in addition to teaching duties.
As described above, a Lawyering Skills professor typically teaches two sections of Lawyering Skills in the fall and two sections of Lawyering Skills II in the spring, for a total of around forty students each semester. Both are first-year courses. (In the second year, students take Lawyering Skills III, which focuses on appellate advocacy and is taught by adjunct professors supervised by the director of lawyering skills.) Each full-time Lawyering Skills professor also teaches an additional course at least once every other year (usually in the spring), which may be another Lawyering Skills course but need not be: Recent examples include Comparative Constitutional Law; (In)famous American Criminal Trials; Privacy Law; Election Law; and Serving Clients Well.
