The University of St. Thomas invites applications for a Graduate Clinical Faculty position in Social Work. The clinical faculty position is a 9-month faculty position with primary responsibility to our graduate field education program.


The clinical faculty will serve as a liaison between the School of Social Work and fieldwork agencies, supervising students’ educational focus in field and teaching at the MSW level in the clinical practice curriculum; advising; committee assignments; professional development activities; community service; and other duties as assigned.

  1. Seminar Instruction:  Teach concurrent field seminar groups on campus for students in field.
  2. Field Liaison and Supervision:  Orient field instructors to the School’s curriculum; participate in summer and fall orientation programs and fall and spring field instructor trainings; help field instructors plan individualized learning experiences for students in accordance with the objectives of field; assist with orientation meetings for students prior to placement; assist in the placement process of individual students needing additional support; meet with field instructor and student in three-way on-site conferences at least twice during placement, for planning purposes at the initial conference and for evaluation purposes at the end of the placement; be available as a resource person for the students; consult with students on field experience and progress toward achieving field education objectives;  consult with field instructors on field experience and progress toward goals; consult with the students and their field instructors regarding field-related problems; contact the field instructor during January and to communicate throughout the school year; assist students with problems of learning and mobilize appropriate resources on behalf of students; assist in the process of discerning students’ professional fit and goals; maintain student records and document processes in the delivery of field education; assign student’s grades in collaboration with the agency field instructor; assess the quality of field instruction and opportunities provided each students; make recommendations to the MSW Director of Field Education regarding continuing participation in the field program of the agency and field instructor(s);  and assist in recruitment and development of new field education sites.
  3. Student Advising: Maintain contact with student advisees each semester, providing professional, career and academic advising.
  4. Committee assignments, professional activities, and community service: Enhance the capabilities of the field program through professional development and service activities; assist with grant-writing, especially those involving field components; assist in research or writing in the area of field education, teach classroom courses when assigned; serve on school committees, including admission committee, and participate in or coordinate other school activities as assigned.
  5. Research/Scholarship:  Maintain a research/scholarship informed approach through research, professional presentation, and publication.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years social work practice experience post MSW
  • Professional social work license eligibility
  • Required skill in group facilitation, verbal and written communication and strength in clinical social work practice

Preferred Qualifications

  • Field and classroom teaching experience in an accredited social work program
